Redefine Princess Culture
What is “princess culture?” Princess culture is seen as representing women as only being passive, only knowing their way around the home, and their happiness comes from marriage. Disney is known for its princess culture, but is this a healthy societal normality? While Disney’s intentions may be pure, children watch these movies at such a susceptible time in their lives and whether they realize it or not, our youth are being manipulated on cultural norms and how to view their bodies.
Through this project, I took the Disney princesses and transformed them into someone you would see walking down the street or school hallway. All of Disney’s princesses range from the ages of 14-21. Those teenage/early adulthood years are when puberty begins, and physical insecurities become heightened. I focused on
common skin imperfections that everyday people may have. I want to show that it is okay to look different
or even just average.
I have personally learned that life is not a fairytale, and you cannot get by just on your looks alone. Why don’t we teach confidence and accentuate our greatest assets, including our minds, leadership skills, hard work, and creativity? I believe awareness alone is the first step in changing this problem and teaching women to empower each other, beginning at a young age. As a creative project, I hope that this will be the first step
in creating something that will make young girls feel more confident, using something they are comfortable
and familiar with, such as Disney princesses.
